York St John offers a number of pathways into study,designed to assist you if you don’t meet the English language or academic levels required for direct entry onto an undergraduate or Postgraduate course.We also offer a number of other short courses and summer schools, exclusively for international students, which will introduce you to studying in the UK and immerse you in British culture. Our International Programmes team offer interactive, tutor-led General English classes for English language improvement, and to build your confidence in using English in a wide range of communication and comprehension situations.

We also offer a Pre-Sessional Programme English language Programme, suitable if you are planning to undertake degree-level study. Accredited by the British Council, the course provides the best possible start to your academic studies by equipping you with the language and study skills essential for success.

You will cover three main themes throughout the programme; including academic language development, academic language and study skills as well as an orientation to the University and our campus. You will practise listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for communication in academic contexts and cover strategies for studying library and IT skills plus using the internet for research. 

We offer a five week or a ten-week course which will begin prior to the start of your academic programme, depending on whether you are starting in September or January.
